The First International Hydraulic Surge and Air Control Symposium

About the Surge and Air Symposium 2013

The phenomenon of pressure demeanor and fluctuation in water and wastewater systems pose a challenge to the academic world and to the world of industry and water. Many studies have been conducted in recent years on issues such as water-air behavior, hydraulic transients and water column separation, cavitational hammer etc., which indicate a need to control the flow of air between the pipe interior and the atmosphere.Researchers and consultants in the field of hydraulic surge around the world, some of whom are among the leading experts in the field, do not fully recognize the air valve as a tool in their arsenal for the prevention and / or alleviation of surge in water and wastewater transmission systems. Among them, there are those who believe that air valves cause surges in the systems.Although there are many symposia in the world that deal with the subject of surge phenomena in liquid transmission systems, there has yet to be a symposium that deals with the effect of air and air valves on the surge phenomena.

A.R.I Flow Control Accessories Ltd has risen to the challenge. The company, with extensive experience in developing, manufacturing and marketing air valves as means for dealing with the surge phenomena in water and wastewater pipelines, has initiated a comprehensive international symposium which will take place in April. The symposium, whose primary objective is to exchange expert knowledge and awareness with the participants on the importance of advanced effective air valves in the prevention or reduction of the impact of surge on water and wastewater systems.Quite a few leading professionals from around the world have consented to participate in this groundbreaking symposium.

The School of Engineering at the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee, will host the second day of the conference to be held in the auditorium at the college. The conference at the college will be open to the interested public.

Mr. Shimon Tal, President of the Israel Water Association and chairman of WATEC, formerly, Water Commissioner of Israel and Chief Engineer of Mekorot, will be the moderator of the two day conference.

Among the topics that will be discussed at the symposium are:

  • Hydraulic transients, water column separation and down-surges.
  • Water loss and contaminant intrusion due to pressure transients and down-surges.
  • Cavitational Hammer - the formation and collapse of vapor cavities and the consequent extreme upsurges.
  • The behavior of air in pressurized pipelines.
  • The effect of air pockets on the occurrence and intensity of upsurges.
  • Basics of air valve types and their purposes and function.
  • Prevention of air pocket accumulation.
  • Control of down surges and cavitation using air valves – stand-alone and in conjunction with other means.
  • Modeling of air valves in hydraulic transient software – one-phase modeling and its limitations – possibilities for two-phase and multi–phase modeling.
  • Case studies and examples.
